28.10.07 : Servette HC – HC Wettingen

Being the last game before the winter break, Servette felt the need to win against the opposing side HC Wettingen with aggressive hockey. Servette loosing the last two games and being ranked fourth in the Swiss League found that this match was essential for the future. As Patrick Montalbetti said, “We have to win this game today to be able to achieve our goal.”

Servette started the game confident in their heads to win the game whilst wanting to play hockey in fifth gear. With several numerous chances Servette opened the score; a long corner to Mark Northcott who skilfully passed the ball to Olaf Lugard and he deflected the ball in the net, was enough to put the score to 1-0. Moments later, Servette’s attack doubled the score once again via a deflection by Olaf Lugard.

Unfortunately after the first two goals, Servette suddenly changed to second gear; the players’ concentration fell leading to several chances for HC Wettingen but with no success. Though, with an individual action by Jurka Rickli, Servette was able to attain a penalty after a severe tackle by the Swiss-German keeper on the forward. Ynte Vermeulen went to the penalty spot but with no success by bringing the score to 3-0. Quickly after, Ynte Vermeulen took his revenge and made a splendid solo action from the right; eventually leading him to flick the ball in the goal.

The players went back to the changing rooms, relieved by the score but disappointed by the game performed in the first half. With thorough discussion by David Smith, the players came out to play the second half but failing to bring the tempo to the level wanted. The Argoviens scored in the first fifthteen minutes, making it 3-1. Following with a silly goal by their forwards, 3-2. Servette took initiative searching for the 4-2; several attempts were unsuccessful, but finally after twenty minutes, Jurka Rickli found the net from a shot of the top of the circle. Few minutes later, the visitors narrowed the score down to a 4-3 lead for Servette by a skilful backhand. In the last ten minutes, the “Grenats” were able to make the final step to victory after a third and powerful goal by Olaf Lugard from a pass by Jurka Rickli.

The final whistle was blown. Servette was happy with the three points but were disappointed in the way they won. They wanted to prove to their supporters that they have the potential to win the championship. But with a tiring season behind the back, all the players were happy to play the third half…
